D'Artagnan Festival at Lupiac, Gers / Une route équestre pour célébrer d'Artagnan

D'Artagnan horse trail follows path of famed Musketeer

Horse riders will soon be able to follow the trail of France's most famous Musketeer, d'Artagnan, under a project launched Sunday in the town where he was born 400 years ago.

Due to open in 2017, the "D'Artagnan European Route" will stretch from his home town of Lupiac in southwestern France to Maastrich in the Netherlands, where he died during a siege in 1673, the organisers said.

Charles de Batz-Castelmore, count of d'Artagnan, was a real-life figure who served King Louis XIV as captain of the Musketeers of the Guard.

His sword-wielding adventures were fictionalised in "The Three Musketeers" and other books by 19th-century novelist Alexandre Dumas, which in turn inspired scores of films.

The 4,000-kilometre (2,500-mile) trail, annotated with moments from d'Artagnan's life, will take riders through six countries visited by the Musketeer -- France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, Italy and Spain.

The launch coincided with the annual D'Artagnan Festival in Lupiac, where he was born in 1615.

Hundreds of locals dressed up in the traditional plumed hats and cloaks to re-enact duels and battles and a new 3.5-metre (11.5-feet) statue was inaugurated.

Sharing photos taken during the exquisite five day workshop Japanese Pictorial Art taught by Yaeko Kurimata, from Tokyo Japan.  During this workshop we discovered the beauty and finesse of Japanese art, and in particular the art of Rinpa.  The name Rinpa (or Rimpa) describes a highly decorative style of painting and articrafts (lacquer and ceramics) that flourished during the Edo period (17th century to 19th century).  This school was named in the 19th century after one of its leading artists, Ogata Korin.  Rinpa basically means 'school of Korin'. The Art Nouveau and Art Deco movements in Europe and United States were deeply inspired and influenced by this style.

It was sheer delight to host this workshop by Yaeko who took us all on a 'holistic' journey as she introduced us to Japanese culture and aesthetics, spanning from the auspicious symbols of Shochikubai found in the painting, to the introduction of Japanese paint brushes and Japanese artist gouache.

Manufacturer of Turner Acryl Gouache, Turner Colour Works Ltd had gracefully sent us plenty of samples to use in class.  We discovered this amazing product, with its brilliant colors and its multiple properties.  This deserves an entire article to show and describe this amazing aryl gouache, which is still not known in France.... coming soon on our blog!

A big thank you to Yaeko and all the students for this wonderful class, and to Turner Colour Works for their generosity!

Journée mondiale des océans! / World Oceans Day!

To celebrate World Oceans Day we're happy to share with you this short video showing extracts from a workshop at Atelier Nadaï.  During this 5-day workshop students explored how to properly paint the colors of the water, the waves, the sea foam, the sand, the transparent effects and reflections of the water as well as the movements of light and shadow on the water, the sky....   Enjoy!

We just completed our Trompe-l'oeil Level 1 workshop.  During this workshop, students learnt how to paint a beautiful decorative panel with different ornaments of style painted in trompe-l’œil.  They studied various molding profiles, learnt how to use the proper tools and techniques to create linear trompe-l'oeil effects, and how to apply the lights and the shadows to create volume.

The majority were beginners, some had never done such kind of work but they were pleasantly surprised to see that they could complete a beautiful panel during this intensive workshop.

Here is are some photos and a short video showing excerpts of what they studied in class.

L'Art Pictural Japonais
du 22 juin au 26 juin 2015
5 jours, soit 40 heures de cours
Lieu:  Atelier Nadaï, 32190 Vic Fezensac, France

A folding screen is a type of free-standing furniture composed of several frames or panels, often connected by hinges.  These panels are foldable and have been used for both practical and decorative purposes.

Folding screens were introduced to France in the 16th century, and they reached their apogee in the 18th century during which famous painters like Antoine Watteau and François Boucher decorated them with richly colored scenes.

There are many styles of folding screens, in Japan they evolved in structure and design, along with the techniques and materials used. During the Nara Period the folding screens were covered in silk and connected with leather or silk cords.  Today, a hand-crafted folding screen is made from several joined panels, bearing decorative painting and calligraphy.

Atelier Nadaï is pleased to receive Yaeko Kurimata, a Japanese decorative painting artist for a 5-day Master Class on painting a decorative panel depicting Japanese Pictorial Art.  Yaeko is an accomplished, internationally renowned artist and is owner of Faux Arts Design in Tokyo, Japan.
